Ladies and Gentlemen,

Here is the situation: You are out and about in a public place or in someone's home or on the job and you find a very valuable object. Doesn't matter what it is, and you are the only one there. No cameras. No witnesses.

Here is the question:  What would you do? Here are  some options, but only these options can you select.

1. Notify the home owner, your boss or authorities of what you have found and try to determine ownership.
2. Secrete it away and tell no one.
3. Offer to split it with someone but they can't tell anyone else.
4. Ignore it and get out of there so you don't get in trouble.

You don't have to worry about getting caught here because it is only a hypothetical find and no one is taking names. You won't be chastised either. Just answer what you would do or like to do. Let's have some fun.

Dusty Carl

G'day Dusty, Here's what would do, 1) hide it away, 2) do some research on the Item as in history and the original owner/owners, 3) Try and return it to said Owners?

But in the mean Time Tell no one as you will find many people claiming to be the owners climbing out of the wood work.

And if none of the Above works then Just Keep it.

good luck AU

Myself, if no one else was around, I would notify the police department,  or take it their myself. Then let them deal with determining ownership. Besides if no one can prove they own it it becomes my property after a predermined time.
It looks like #1 has been the top choice. However it is a sad note that society has had to resort to legislating morality. I hope they don't consider find coins in the park or on the beach a "theft by finding"
I hope each and everyone of you have a safe and wonderful holiday season.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

I "found" a purse in the middle of the street one night and when I went to pick it up, it started scooting across the street.  Thats when I saw the fishing line and heard the giggles from the bushes.  Busted!

The same thing happened to me a few years back. The kid was busting up laughing as I scooted around trying to pick up a dollar I thought the wind was blowing around. Did I ever look silly.

Here is an addendum to the "to keep or not to keep" post. I found it on Wikipedia.
Lost, mislaid, and abandoned property are categories of the common law of property which deals with personal property which has left the possession of its rightful owner without having directly entered the possession of another person. Property can be considered lost, mislaid or abandoned depending on the circumstances under which it is found by the next party who obtains its possession.

The rights of a finder of such property are determined in part by the status in which it is found. Because these classifications have developed under the common law of England, they turn on nuanced distinctions. The general rule attaching to the three types of property may be summarized as: A finder of property acquires no rights in mislaid property, is entitled to possession of lost property against everyone except the true owner, and is entitled to keep abandoned property.[1] This rule varies by jurisdiction.[2]

I think is sounds quite reasonable. So finding a buried coin in the park follows the "lost" category. That is unless someone threw it into the park intentionally.

We have them fountains here too. For the most part people leave them alone (including me). I think that would constitute a theft because the parks or wherever they are located use the coins to help with the maintenance costs.

When I was a kid I used to pull the "moving wallet" or dollar bill on people.  Everyone laughed it off.  It was great fun!   Great
