Ladies and Gentlemen,

Here is the situation: You are out and about in a public place or in someone's home or on the job and you find a very valuable object. Doesn't matter what it is, and you are the only one there. No cameras. No witnesses.

Here is the question:  What would you do? Here are  some options, but only these options can you select.

1. Notify the home owner, your boss or authorities of what you have found and try to determine ownership.
2. Secrete it away and tell no one.
3. Offer to split it with someone but they can't tell anyone else.
4. Ignore it and get out of there so you don't get in trouble.

You don't have to worry about getting caught here because it is only a hypothetical find and no one is taking names. You won't be chastised either. Just answer what you would do or like to do. Let's have some fun.

Dusty Carl

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

The law makers took care of the situation in Australia/Victoria
There is a law called thief by finding.
Offence under: Section 74, Crimes Act 1958
Overview: A person can be charged with theft if he or she finds or accidentally comes across something belonging to another and then keeps it or deals with it as if he or she is the owner.
So i will also go  with  Number 1

Interestingly (and surprisingly) enough, we DO have that law in many parts of the USA.   It is just that most of us have never heard of it.   A very quick Google search showed cases of it not only being on the books, but also enforced in California.  Arizona also has it on their books and I'm sure if you look up the following terms, ("theft by finding", "stealing by finding", "larceny by finding") there is  a good chance you will find it listed either in your state or one you travel to frequently.   And even if it doesn't apply at the state level where you live, you still have to consider whether it exists at the local level.
