Well you aint getting one from me mate Just the thought of having to listen to you for a 1/2 hour gives me the goose bumps, but on the other hand it would be great to have a DVD with different people showing how they go about their hunt and besides learning a trick or two it's a lot less tiring when someone else is doing all the digging. So if it were a properly made DVD with good info on Sea, Land and beach detecting then yes I probably would get one.

Hi GD great to see you on the forum, sure hope that all is well with you and the family and that you are enjoying you new home in the USA.

All the best

I have several books on MD'ing and to be honest they are tantamount to useless except for a few hints on what kind of places to think about looking but I like to try and think outside the norm. And by the time these books and DVDs are available they are usually out of date. and like someone else said above all the brands are different in features and controls so unless it was machine specific whats the point. I don't know about other manufactures but Garrett hand out free DVDs with there machines or have them online. Not to mention you put in the hardwork and money to produce one and a week after it's released some lowlife has uploaded it to the web, or worse yet are selling it on EBay under a different name. So no I wouldn't buy one. I must admit " modern electronic prospecting " is a good read, with some good tips but even though its by Charles Garrett and Roy Lagal they don't really recommend Garrett detectors but just give some ideas on where to start and point out things like when detecting in water take a pan as well, which although not obvious to a beginner it will eventually dawn on all of us to do so. The best book I think I read was again by Charles Garrett " The Advanced handbook on Modern Metal Detectors " is again not model specific but more gives tips on where to look what to look for along with theory on how machines work. but you don't need to know how to build or fix an internal combustion engine to drive a car.
Gee i write to much. ROFL
better as Homie said to learn the hard way just get out there and
Keep On

Gozzo,

Thanks for the great comments on DVD training, you have given me more to think about..... Including the copying part of the course onto the Internet. We in South Africa do not get detecting magazines, in fact the only ones I have are the ones which I have downloaded. Except for YouTube, we also do not get movies / Dvd's so that is why it is a bit complicated for us as beginners to learn. I do agree that the best way to learn is to get out there and work at it, putting in the hours, but it would of been nice if I could of gone with someone who could of shown me the basics.

Thanks again for the very thought provoking ideas you have given me.

I still say reading a book is never the same as walking the path.

Going to the best of schools is not going to teach you the little stuff that makes the Difference.

That only comes with time.

No Short Cuts in Learning.  Sorry!

Hi Homie,

You are right... going out and doing is the best way to learn.... but learning the other stuff like using Google Earth, finding the best maps and how to clean your finds correctly etc, help is very much appreciated and just makes life easier.... But I agree 100%, the best way to learn is just to get out and do  Great

Hi Dpease,

Thanks for the response, doing is always the best and I have to agree with you about using the sound more than the display, I do exactly the same  Great and the depth meter does not work accurately on the Ace 250...
