But I thought more information on a target is helpful, no?

If you're going to dig every signal, you don't need all of the data.   And if you rely on the data to make your dig/no dig decision, you're going to miss a lot of good stuff the dig every signal crowd recovers because you let the data tell you it was "junk"

i agree about target id. they are far too indecisive and often wrong. you stated no beach so if it is land only i would lean toward tesoro or whites. again a lot depends on the area, how bad the mineralization may be, the amount of junk in the ground, electrical interference such as power lines. you may want to rely more on discrimination than on what the target id is. especially deep faint targets. the id meter will be wrong more often than not on deep targets, including the depth.

in prime spots dig everything except what you are discriminating against and don't over discriminate. listen to the sounds the detector makes and once you get to know your machine and you are in tune to it you'll find you may not even look at the meter. you'll be in a zone and you'll do well. i have often hip mounted boxes on occasion and wear them on a belt behind me where i can't see it and go strictly on tone to id.

i almost never pass up a target because of id because you might just hear of your friend getting an amazing find the same day and same spot that you looked. again this is all about opinions. as long as its a stable and reliable machine you'll get the right one for your application after researching a few that fit the bill and areas you'll be searching. if i were in the market now for a new land machine i would research the tesoro vaquero, cibola, cortes models i've heard good things about all 3.

How easy is the tesoro to learn? I have been looking on youtube for basic instruction on it and not much luck.

Can the tesoro be used on beach as well?

As long as you keep the control box dry, you shouldn't have any trouble using any of the Tesoros at the beach.   Tesoros are on my short list when people ask me for recommendations----and they are probably the only detector I'd consider buying new (just because the lifetime warranty that comes with the new machine is that good)......otherwise, I buy my detectors like I do my vehicles---gently used.

your best bet on the tesoro info will be to ask in the tesoro section of the forum under machines. i don't own a tesoro but would definitely get one. the reviews are very good. the models i mentioned are not beach machines because you stated mostly land. while the models i mentioned are excellent land machines they will fail miserably on the beach. i think tesoro may make a beach machine but i'm not sure how they would be on land. try asking about the tesoro models on the tesoro section of the forum. users of those machines will be most knowledgeable. for the beach there is no better machine than minelab in my opinion, but if you are rarely hunting the beach i'd still check the tesoros for the land sites.

Ok I have done some more research... and correct me if I'm wrong, but the tesoro is only a single tone machine correct? Sounding when theres a target? Looks like I will need a propointer too. Forgive my cluelessness Crazy

if you go to the message forum page and then metal detecting and then to specific machines you'll be able to go to a tesoro specific thread. i would ask all the tesoro questions right through that thread. i'm sure the users will know the answers. hope that helped.

Tesoro machines are all considered "turn on and go" detectors. They have a zero learning curve. Each knob and function is self explanatory and can be operated with confidence that they do what they are labeled to do. All that being said, don't ever think they are not some of the most reliable machines out there. They have phenomenal depth capabilities and some of the longest battery life in the industry. Don't sell them short. They work fine on the beach.
