Detecting I am new to the THunting forum.  I see the U.S. coins forum doesn't see much action.  I haven't been out lately with the winter weather round here.  Thought I would post some coins from my last hunt.  I found these two beauties just a few feet from each other just before I was ready to call it a day.  First I dug the 1859 Indian head penny then the 1902 Barber dime.  The Indian is my oldest coin yet and the dime is my first Barber and my oldest silver.  The site where I found these is on my agenda for the whole summer next year so hopefully I will be able to liven up the U.S. coins forum a bit.

Congrats PittsburghWill, I always love to see some of the 19th century US coins.
I hope to see more once the ground thaws too!

Thanks.  It is a first year Indian.  The only year that didn't have a shield on the back.  I have it soaking in olive oil trying to get the crust off of it.

Did you think of electrolysis?

Hi PW,
I am here in Canada close to our common border, have some older sites and find a surprising amount of US coins, if you look through my older posts you will see some nice older US copper and silver coins, like your two recent finds Great......HH....Johnnn

I've never tried it.  I thought electrolysis was for iron relics.  Is there an easy method?  Is it safe for coins?
