Greetings!
 Just a thought
I was raised 9000ft above sea lvl ion Colorado so the terrain is similar
I do know that when there is a forrest fire if the trees are left  sometimes you can read the markings that were carved into them before the fire
As the bark is dry and burns fast and the green wood much slower
Just an idea
BTW beautifull pics makes me home sick

Is there any possibility that the mill was built there to conceal a hidden entrance to the josephine?

No. The mill was constructed on the creek. The ore that was found was up on the south side of the creek above the mill. There is a large rock pile there, and there doesn't seem to be any place the rocks could have come from.

Remember, the Spanish were using Indian forced labor. So, the entrance holes would have been what is called "coyote holes", just big enough for one person to enter or exit at a time. Very easy to cover those up.
