Does anyone know if Captain Kidd is the only source of the Cocos treasure?

Steve?

Hi Steve,
I don't believe captain kidd ever sailed in those waters, like most stories about Cocos it is a rumour.

I have read that quite a few treasures are rumoured to be buried there, namely the Treasure of Lima, this was allegedly stolen from Lima Peru, in 1821.
The man who stole it was Captain William Thompson of the brig, Mary Dear.

Other historical Characters rumoured to have buried treasure on Cocos, are:
1). Sir Francis Drake, 16th century privateer, pirate and English hero.
2). Stede Bonnet,  17th century, pirate/privateer.
3). Benito Bonitas, 18th/19th century,(AkA,  Bloody Sword) Rumoured to be an English naval captain.

A German called Gissler, was made honorary governor of Cocos, he started a colony on Cocos by relocating 25 german families to the island, however after trying to make a success of the colony for 25 years and also searching it fruitlessly, for the same amount of time, both he and his fellow colonists abandoned the island.

I hope this goes some way to answering your Question.
Best wishes Crowsnest.

Hey guys, just joined the forum today, i was searching for details on cocos island and stumbled across your conversation! Just wanted to say thanks for sharing your information and was wondering if you knew if people are still allowed on the island to explore it? I'm going travelling soon and thought i might head over if i was in south America.

Thanks - Ero
