Pgill the old beer cans had the pull tab that came off the can. Thou now some of the cool drinks still have them I can remember that we had the habit of putting the tab in the can before drinking the beer then once empty we would stand on the can with one foot and then very quickly touch the side of the can that would make the can collapse on itself and reducing it to about 3cm in hight it would also reduce the space that it took in the rubbish bin.

In the USA, the steel cans all required the use of an opener affectionately referred to as a Church Key. Those were the days.
