Yip on the beach mostly , but at that age you can only hold their attention so long. For them there is still so much to seeeeee and so much to doooooo! HEHEHE.
Yeah I love them....changed my life.
When my wife gets a new piece (ring chain etc) from a hunt, they tell every one Daddy "bought it at the beach!" lol!
Think I am doing the Farm Sunday AM really really AM.
Will update Blogg then as well.

Daddy "bought it at the beach he he that's a nice one  Grin bet you spend more time looking at what they're up to than detecting when you got them with you but hey what are kids for if you don't get to look after them right? Took my nephew to detect with me on the farm he gets so impatient though. He just wants to dig as soon as there is a signal no pinpointing for him mate he just digs LOL

Hi levettp

Could you give me more info on it? I'm getting an error when I program the PIC when it dose the code verification  Sad but when I plug it in my desk top (on the serial port) it programs the chip without any errors. Do you have a link that I could go and have a look at it?

Hi Jimmy

Sounds good I have not found any coins yet so still cant tell how it performs on coins that have been buried for some time but I have been finding very small pieces of wire (lots of that on the farm) some were so small that I had a really hard time to find them.

So Pgill are you ready to climb up that mountain again?

Regards Xavier

They don't have stock in SA but delivery from overseas is only 7 days.

How do you program the PIC? Bootloader or PicStart?

Well I believe that Bootloader is for PicAxe any how I have a JDM programmer and a Velleman VM111 development board (serial port) I was also looking at the Flowcode V4 software over here they want R2800.00 in the US $64.00 that's like R480.00 for the same software so now I'm starting to really %$#@ off infact to the point of dumping the whole idea (I hate being riped off) of PIC programming not to mention that so far what I have bought has proven to be quite useless and not having a clue as to what I'm doing ain't helping me much either. I did the tutorial for Flowcode and it looks pretty good even I got things to work on the simulator however I still have to burn a PIC to see if I can get it to work. Ho yes what is PicStart? another thing to add to my list of unknowns LOL

All the best Xavier

Hi Viking...sorry for my missing your post of the children. They are great looking kids and I'm sure a handful. I know, I had three of those rug rats a long long time ago but now they all have their own and I'm sitting back saying: "I told you guys I would get even." I have 6 grandchildren, 3 boys, 3 girls. Now when things come up, like birthdays, holidays, old grandpa just writes a check and smiles. The days of buying them things has ended, writing a check is a whole lot easier...Remember Viking, there is a light at the end of the tunnel....Regards, Jim

LOL Xavier ... It's like a built in function of PIC's to make you swear a lot

From all my own swearing at PIC's, I can give you the following advice:

1- Get a PICkit programmer - it's the official PIC programmer from Microchip. You can buy it from AVNET KOPP at approximately R350.00
2- Then install MPLAB - It's free and you download it from the Microchip website
3- Now you need a compiler - I use the CCS compiler. It's really a great compiler with prompt support on their user forum. For this you need a license ... unless you know what torrent sites are for :Smiley
* Don't use the free Hitec compiler from Microchip ... you might develop tourette's syndrome  Angry
4- Now select a PIC that will do the job you want. I use the dsPIC30F2020 for my metal detector. It has great features e.g. A/D conversion at 2 million samples per second. It apparently also has a 20 nano second comparator that will be quite handy for a VLF type MD. But this PIC has a lot of problems as well. Download the errata of the data sheet to see what I mean.
5- Then study the data sheet of the PIC like the Bible! You must really understand all the peripherals of the PIC especially their control registers.
6- Build a prototype PCB. You can buy a development board but I advise you to build one yourself to learn the hardware. It's quite simple and will not cost more than R100. You basically only need to connect the pins for programming, add a few caps for voltage stability, add a crystal (unless the PIC has an internal oscillator) & connect a resistor to the master reset pin. Also connect a LED to one output to use for debugging your code.

An finally, my best advice: If you do not have a LOT of patience, stop trying to learn PICs now and rather spend your money on a few bottles of good quality South African red wine!
