How did you clean it?

Well it had some very stubborn dirt on it so at first it was the tooth brush but that did not help next I used a bit of vim that got rid of most of it then I used a bit of brasso that got rid of the other bit and for the final clean I just rubbed it on an old pair of jeans.

Smiley Nice coin X. It was minted the year before I was. 1 D must be 1 penny, What does D stand for?

I've been hunting an abandoned railroad bed (1890's) and came up with some old spikes. Here is a plaque I made with them. gambol

D stands for denarius, a Roman coin considered to be ancestral to the English penny.  By the way, American nail sizes also use "D" to stand for "penny" as in 10d for a 10 penny nail (3 inches in length).

The symbol "D" for penny is a French term "Derier"..... Why we all seem to use this is anyone's guess  Idea Gambol, that picture looks great  Great I love it.... What I would do though is change the thumb tacks for some of those antique looking tacks, will look nicer  Wink Is the history actually of the Railroad that the ails came from? Very well done, thanks for showing us it...  Pray
