Go Up Go Down

Here is a bit more but so far all that I'm finding is for the tourist I will have to change my search.

At the foot of the Kamiesberge ( mountain range), surrounded by granite rock formations, lies the little town of Kamieskroon, founded in 1924.
The town actually started in 1850, eight km north of the present town, when the Dutch Reformed Church decided to start its own congregation, away from the main centre in Clanwilliam.

Four farmers bought a piece of the farm Wilgenhoutskloof for ?140 and donated it to the church. It was situated at the western foot of Sneeukop in a narrow valley. Mr C van Nieuwkerk started to built the church in 1861 and the 32m long, 11m wide and 5.6m high building was completed in 1864 at the cost of ?2300.

The town was named Bowesville, after Dr Henry Bowe, who was the district surgeon of Namaqualand during that time. The name was later changed to Bowesdorp.

Too little water, too little space for development and the importance of the nearby developing Springbok forced the town fathers to find a place somewhere else. A section of the farm Koets, eight km south of Bowesdorp, was bought by the church from the widow, Charlotte van Wyk. The church elders prohibited the sale and manufacturing of liquor on any of the premises in the new town of Kamiesberg, later changed to kamieskroon. The church was taken into use on 27 July 1924 and the town was established.

The school, post office, police station and stores soon followed to the new established town of Kamiesberg, later called Kamieskroon. That meant the end of the town of Bowesdorp. Land was sold to Josephson and Schapera and they built the hotel just outside the town borders.

Hi
Yip , nice chatting to you today. Still can't believe how it cleaned up....I never thought it would look this good. Now you know why I was so gutted when I lost it AGAIN! Actually quite a funny story that...I found a 70 year old coin.....I cleaned it so it looked new.....and then I sent it back off into the universe again for 2 days....and then found it again  Idiot
Xavier that is a great link you got there....well done, that is certainly going too be bookmarked lol!
I don't have any names though. Interesting is that there is a ghost story that the farmers say is "real".....some guy that burried gold there during the war and he wonders around trying to find someone that he can tell about the gold........I am going to go and camp AT his haunt.....alone cause he is more than welcome to tell me....I'm a good listner hehehehe! Cheesy

I'll get the name of the ghost and plug that in at your link Xavier, that might be a start.Ghost stories are usually based on factual people.

Xavier, I also am skeptical when it comes to ghosts but Often the name given to said entity is that of an old village member. I thought it may give me a place to start.
Pgill, I tell you what, I'll give you the day off so that you can organize those maps for us. Just stay at home and get your boss to call me Wink
Look forward to the feedback.

Hi guys.
Xavier....I wouldn't believe that you went on a hunt if I did not have photographic evidence.
Don't know if I'm being an idiot , but if your machine works okay on the beach, it should work great inland also....not?
Any how it sounds like you picked a spot that might have a story it wants  to tell Rider

No no Viking

The thing is that the soil inland is more mineralized than the see sand hence the difference in the way that it behaves.

Regards Xavier PS will post them pics LOL
