It depends on whether or not he has a chocolate ice cream meter. I believe his only uses vanilla.

Pendulums are great you can't beat solid state technology.
Sorry but I am having a good old chuckle on my side of the pond. I am just kidding really!

Grin Grin GD I know all that OK let me tell you all what I did and how.
First I measured the inductance of my search coil 250uH ( well I knew that I made the coil) ok now I took 0.5mm wire (thats all I had) and wound it on a piece of ferrite till I had 250uH then I measured the resistance of my search coil (2.2R including the cable) then the resistance of the probe if I can recall it was 1.x R I then placed a resistor in series with the probe to get the same resistance and viola. Now when I switch from search coil to probe I don't have to re-adjust my machine. I should have taken some photos when I did it but did not SO if you like I can build another one to show you all Ho yes I placed the probe in a PVC tube (electrical) then filed it with candle wax I thought that way if I wanted to I could change it but it works great so no need. It will detect a coin at 100mm (flat) and about 120mm (standing)

All the best
Regards Xavier

It will detect a coin at 100mm (flat) and about 120mm (standing)

Now there you go. That's a much more meaningful and relevant way to use the resistance as a "guesstimate" rather than a calculated inductance. Wire resistance is only an estimate from the manufacturer. Even a diameter shift in one mm of the wire along its entire length can mean a miscalculation of the resistance for the entire length.

The resistor in series acts as a snubber which keeps the collapsing field from feeding EMF back to the circuit and damaging components but it does reduce the power to the coil as well. You did mention that it got warm before you added it.

I'd like to ask you other two to stop the references to war or argument. That's not at all what this is and I find your reference to that to be an insult. Keep that to yourself please. No comment is necessary now, either. Just knock it off.
