Too wide for a belt tip, and too long.... If it is a sword scabbard, it must of been a very wide sword  Idea Idea But at this stage I am looking at a wide sword.... But a gold coin would be better  Kiss Kiss Kiss

The thing is 4cm wide so that would be OK for a belt but yes 10cm long is a bit much for a belt.

Umm, how thick would the hole /slot have been  Idea cause looking at it, it only looks around 5mm thick which may be a bit slim for the blade  Idea Just a thought  Shocked

I would think that if there was a leather sheath that went on it that there would have been holes to sow them together so I would go with the belt tip as it could have simply been pressed on the belt.

Thinking back on all the sword scabbards I have handled in my life (and that's more than one and less than 6--not counting all metal scabbards), I disagree with you on needing holes to sew them on.   And this supported by the majority of the examples I've seen on line....most do not appear to be "sewn" on.

As for size, a lot is going to depend on the type of sword we're talking about.      Remember, if this piece is from a scabbard, it's function is a) decorative, and b) to keep the pointy end of the sword from coming out of the scabbard.   The decorative function helps determine how large it can be.....ranging from a very small portion of the total scabbard to approximately 1/4 to 1/3 the total length.

By the way, 4cm wide would be a reasonable width (back-edge to cutting edge) for a late 19th century or 20th century military blade including the ceremonial swords still carried.  the blade should be about 5 or 6mm thick, although at the toe (point), it will be considerably less than that because of the taper.

Just a guess, but I'll bet whoever owned the sword served in India at one time.   As for age, it is probably late 19th, early 20th century.....although it could easily be either older than that range (someone carrying a family heirloom) or newer than that (swords are still carried by the military worldwide under certain circumstances).  For that matter it could be from a large knife or bayonet scabbard/sheath.

Hi,
Glad you liked it, Personally i was blew away at the sheer range of this one man`s passion.
Some are great looking pieces, others are just pure sinister.
Either way i never knew there were so many different styles.

Hi Guys
Thanks for all your input and the great link!
The engraving is pretty, holding in my hand I would say it's a chape from a scabbard, it weighs 46.2 grams so it's way too heavy for a belt tip.....I think.
A lot of British soldiers also spent time in India so  Bittburg may be right....who knows.
I'd sure like to find the sword though......
