PGill has a point, where you are you don't want to be on the beach....you want to be on the farms. I would look for a book that I saw on a traveling program that has all the old kingdom roads in the UK. It has all the roads in Medieval times mapped out. Don't know the name though.
Good hunting out your way, Roman sites, Celtic etc. I am envious. You should join a club, there seem to be loads over there. You could learn a lot from a club.
Like where to hunt for starters, and what they are finding. Also keep your ears open for any stories relating to hoards and the like.

I know its best to join a club. I am actually waiting to hear from a club near me so hopefully it all goes well. Farms are the best places to be, but a lot of farmers dont like giving permission to people to detect on their land. If you know farmers or belong to a club it gives you access to land because they usually have loads of land to do.
I will make more of a effort this year to get out more. i have a few books on roman britain and some old maps. The town i live in was founded by vikings and there is still loads of artifacts to be found.
Some people i know had a extension build on their house and when they dug the foundations they found skeletons. It turned out that all the houses in the area was built on the old monastery grave yard dating back to the 12 century.
I will take you up on the offer Pgill. Where abouts do you live in johannesburg?

Hi Peter

I know where Westonaria is.
My folks live in the south of Johannesburg in Bassonia, its near Alberton area.
Both my grandfathers worked in the goldmines back in SA. My dads father worked in mines all over the town. I can remember when he lived in Roodepoort in one the big mining houses, it had like 6 bedrooms and three bathrooms. He always brought us iron pyrite back.
When he retired he went to work at Gold Reef City for about 8 years taking people underground.
When i was younger we would go play on the old minedumps near us all day long. We used to be covered in that fine powdery yellow sand.
Those were the days when it was still safe to wonder round alone.

Hi gautenglion

I went to gold reef city on a guided tour once perhaps your Grandfather was the guide. Do you remember the top star dive-in? it was our Friday night outing when we were young LOL that was on top of an old mine dump.

All the best Xavier

Hi gautenglion,

I have been to the Gold Reef City mine on 2 occasions.... it was quite nice place to go. I also worked down the mine at Westonarea Gold mine for a while..... It was nice at the start, but working over big diesel engines in a mine that is 40'c was not funny..... But it was a job.
If you look under Videos in the Multimedia menu on my site, there is a series of videos on going down the Gold Reef City mine.... Maybe your Grandfather would enjoy them (if he is alive)....

Xavier, Top Star Drive-In in now a flea Market..... The big screen is still there on top of the hill, but is now a signboard. Yeah those days of drive-ins were fantastic.... young ones do not know too much about them..... All closed down as far as I know....

Hi Xavier and Peter

I can remember the Top star drive in. It used to be the most exciting thing going there to watch a movie with the crappy speaker hooked up on the window. I can still taste the slush puppies and cheap hotdogs. I remember times when we used to get in the boot of the car just before driving in so that you didnt have to pay for everybody.
I think a lot off children were conceived in the old drive ins. Xavier were you from Johannesburg originally. Things have changed that much its sad really.
I can recall going to town on a saturday walking round the Carlton centre and then to the movies.

Hi Viking....as I sit him in snowy Brooklyn, I get a kick out of reading the posts you guys put on. The memory lane bit sure sounds like it could be us here in the states that remember the old drive-ins and also we did the same thing with the trunk (boot) as 3 guys could fit in there with no problem. The drive-ins were the best place to take a date.
I was hoping to detect some of them but never got around to it as most are overrun with weeds, trees and everything else. But you guys surely took me back a few years...thanks as those were great memories of my youth. Jim
