I was in RAF Uxbridge.
The building we had was the Very Same that the Battle of Britain was fought from.
They had made a second floor and us Yanks chucked it full of Com Gear.
Microwave to Most of Norther Cost of the UK. Belgium, France, Tropo to Spain, Greece , Turkey and Germany.
We even used some of the First Trans Atlantic Sub cables still working from back in the 1950's. They Died on a monthly basis and was just used for Auto Von for troops to talk home.
Satellite back then sucked because they did not have Elastic Buffers that did away with the delay thing.
At one time I my self was in charge of any thing that moved through that port.
The history there blew me away.
You could walk from our building to a few others and down in the bowls of hell you would find a old Switch board . LOL The would have a Ping Pong ball that would fall when a call was coming in.
The Operator had to Plug a Patch Cord into the Calling Line and ask what they wanted.
They using the same patch cord connect it to the people that they needed to talk to. Or at least get them to folks that could do it.
Yep, Life was a whole pile different back then.
