Multitasking you say well I have to agree with you but still not enough time  Sad but it will all come together soon. I like your idea of getting more people just don't go stepping on anyones toes. Pgill how far are you from the Eastern Transvaal? have you been to Gods window? there are some old gold mines in the area but a lot of panning was done in the river there is an old town that they have made in a living museum (Pilgrim's Rest) it could yield you some old coins and you could even find a nugget. I was there a very long time ago but still have some very good memories about the place I camped in the pine forest that belongs to the Sapi company. Pilgrim's Rest is big on tourism so don't try to say there for the night but there are some camping sites near by with all the facilities. It's a great place to go for a long weekend.

Hehehehehe I am always stepping on peoples toes  Laughed my ass off Beheading

I am about 3 hours from Pilgrims rest... I do know about all the panning etc, it has become very expensive to do these days.
On Sunday, we are going to a mine in Magalisberg that you get a complete tour of the mine, and then you get to do panning..... If you wish you pay R25 to get a certificate to keep your gold that you find. Apparently this place is the only mine in the country that can give the gold, this is because the site is a natural heritage site etc. The certificate gives you permission to have the gold.... I guess a type of license. So I am really looking forward to this event.... will take lots of photos.  Great Hey maybe I will find the biggest nugget ever found  Grin

Be sure to let me know if you do find it. I was not referring to you panning at Pilgrims Rest just suggesting that you take your detector and look around the old mines and along the river to look for old coins and such and if you're very luck you could find a nugget or two.

I have detected on some mine properties, but they do not take very kindly to it.... I have had the security give me some up-hill  No no!
The one village that I detected on was an old mine village, and there are hostels that belonged to the mine that I have also been on... but it is not too safe going to these places.... shady characters around.

I will be taking photos of the place that we are going to Sunday, so will let you know and what I find.

Outback, thanks for the reply... we do appreciate it very much.

Lukas Van Der Merwe is the guy I think you are talking about? Has a company in Randfontein just outside of Johannesburg. He has the museum at his work place. I have photos of the displays that he has. I will try and find them and post them.....
I have spoken to Lukas on many occasions and he has always said that he will call me when they go on a hunt, but when I speak to him again... He seems to have forgotten or something  No no!

Him and a group of guys do go for these hunts, but it seems to be a bit of a secretive club (might be wrong)... I get the feeling that they do not like visitors tagging along. These guys have found some amazing stuff though over the years..... when they hit a Boer war site, they look for the rubbish dumps and hit it with a backacter / digger.....

If you do get any info on the guys though I would appreciate it very much..... maybe we can somehow break that secretive barrier with them  Violent

Hi PGILL...
I don't often post here but was interested in your South Africa subject.
I was in SA in 2006 with Lukas, Pierre, Pete, John, Wolf and a few others that I can't remember their names. We did a Boer War site, near Ladysmith/Harrismith. It was a trip to remember. You are right about the dump, as they had a large sized backhoe. What was most interesting was where we stayed. It was on the Tugela river with no electricity, and hot water was gravity fed from a 100 gallon drum that was warmed with a fire under it. Quite rustic but worth every day of the trip.
I was with Lukas and Pierre in Hunstanton, England the first week in October of this year as well.
Lukas has moved from J'burg and is now on a spread ner Port Elizabeth. He is building a new museum there as well.
We were invited, I think it was Pierre, there was 2 from the US and one from England. I think we had about 20 or so all told. I'm not sure if they have a in-group or not but they did invite me back for 2011. I have nothing but good things to say about the way we were treated and all.
Anyway that's my 2 cents worth...Jim in Brooklyn

PGill et al...
There's a forum that the SA guys post on. Not so much Lukas as he is up to his butt with his new home and all.

I'm sure they would be happy to hear from fellow SA detectorists...Jim
