Hey boys.
Nothing to report treasure wise, just best wishes for the festive season to all of you and yours!
Helium balloon is much better platform for the camera. I'm looking at an ROV build in the new year. Might be a nice project to follow. Will incorporate, manipulator , lighting, full pan and tilt camera platform, metal detector and possibly a way of shooting a dart for marking the spot with a buoy.....or spearfishing LOL!.
Anyway, probably start in Feb......use Jan to start scrounging parts! This is the fun part.
Be safe and be good, and if you can't be good.....be good at it........and take photographs hehe!
Merry Christmas
Viking

xavier, Intersting article on the Vaalkrans assualt. I can't help from being an armchair General when I think Buller should have advanced on the Brakfontein Ridge instead of Vaalkrans. The Topo map shows an elevation of 1100 m all along the Brakfontein ridge. while the lower peak of the Vaalkrans is 900 m. with the upper peaks at 1100 m.  If his troops had gotten to the top of the Brakfontein ridge they would have been on the same level as the Boers. Also you would expect the main road to Ladysmith to be heavily guarded with artillery which it was. It sounds like the Boers had better guns than the English. I guess that was the doing of the Germans. History is one of my favorites and I have just began to read about SA.

Hi Gambol1

Nice to hear from you again. The problem with the Boers is that they had no military training most of them were farmers (Boers) and some were teachers, doctors, lawyers and ex policemen so lots of bad decisions were made field marshals and lieutenants were chosen more or less at random or by their popularity amongst the men, however the Boers were great marksmen having learned how to shoot at a very young age. Had the Boers had the proper leadership history would not have been what it is today. Another thing to remember is that the British build concentration camps where they held woman and children and that is really how they got the Boers to surrender. I just got a book called ADRIFT ON THE OPEN VELD it is the story told by Deneys Reitz and basically his memoirs on the war it is not a glorified story just the facts of what happened and where, get it if you can you will most surely enjoy it.

All the best
Xavier
