Nice display of the spear point Pgill!  Do you have any idea of its vintage and origin?  Very cool find!

And congratulations on your 21 year certificate and watch.  That is a long time.  I spent 28 years working as a rural mail carrier, so I do know how long it is!

Hi Arfieboy,

The spear is from the 1890's and was lost probably by one of the black people who was at the blockhouse helping the British  Great It is said that the Boers used the blacks as servants / workers and therefore would not entrust a weapon to them, therefore did not use them during the Boer war (not sure how true that is), the British on the other hand, made the most out of a bad situation, and trusted them. There are very few of these spears found, as they normally rust to nothing, so I am fortunate to have found this one  Clapp

Thanks for the best wishes, you are right, it is a long time to work for one company  Shocked

The pictures are not quite the sum total of my abbreviated hunting season for 2011, but most of it!

Is that a ZULU spear? I thought their heads were a little broader. I may be in way out left field but still look great in the frame. Was there anything else around where the spear was found?

Arfieboy, I love the ring  Great the only jewelry that I have ever found is an earring  No no! I would love to find a gold ring, oh well, my turn will come  Hello

Renegade 7, As far as I understand, this spear is from the Khosa's and not the Zulu's the British used these guys for labour etc at the blockhouses. So I take it that one of them lost this item. The other option is that a British soldier removed the spear from it's owner forcefully, then lost it himself. The spear was found at a blockhouse site. We also found bullet cases and a couple of small buckles, and the 1928 silver 3 penny. It was a great day out, and will return there someday pretty soon.

Thanks Pgill.  I like the ring, too!  It is sterling and weighs .4oz. (11gm), and it is just my size.  Eventually you will find some rings if you just "keep on swingin"!).  Are you near the beaches where you can search them?  I understand there are a lot of rings and jewelry there!    Detecting

Arfieboy, I am far from the sea (500+km,s) Our inland searches are house foundations and Boer war sites. Viking seems to be the guy to find rings etc, he is in the right place  Great But one day I will find a ring  Detecting

Ah, Viking... Only a South African would understand that comment you made  Grin Grin Grin The spear is definitely one of my best finds  Great looks great on my wall  Welcome I think X got a bit jealous of the spear like he did with the silver 3 penny bit  Funny Funny Funny even though he found the best button.
