Hi Gambol, our gold is very deep veins.... we have one of the deepest mines here where I live... We look at km's down...  Wise scary stuff. The place where we get panning gold is mainly a place called Pilgrims rest and Barberton.... You cannot exactly just walk in there and pan, you have to get a licence, and also it is a historical monument.... so as a tourist, you can pan but it costs, and you cash in the gold at the end of the day... you cannot carry raw gold around. This is what I hate, as I would love to just go in and come back with a small bottle of gold....

Pgill, you answered several questions I had about detecting in S.A. Apparently the Gold laws are more restrictive there than in the states. Could that be because mining is such a big business there? Also I know the gold like the diamonds come from deep mines but I didn't know if there was also abundant placer gold there. Doesn't matter if you can't pan it.

Its' a good idea to stay away from water, I worked for a division of Seimens for a while. We did nothing but clean electronic medical equipment that had been contaminated by water or dust. Uncoated SMD boards are extremely sensitive to surface contamination especially RF boards. In a salt atmosphere they do not have to get wet, the humid environment is enough.

Glad to hear that your coil is ok,,,, that is worrying..... I stay away from the water with my detectors  Amen

Viking, The Fisher F75 coil is supposed to be waterproof but it had a manufacturing defect in it. The connection chamber on the back of the coil was sealed with silicone sealant which did not do the job. I didn't work with it long enough in salt water to know how well it works.  Wise

Hi Gambol,

Gold mining in South Africa is very big.... we have a mine that is about 4km deep near me.... very rich mine.... Diamonds is also very big, and as a normal person, they will shoot you if you get caught with them..... If you look on a map of South Africa, check on the west side, you will see a large restricted area that normal people are not allowed to go.... those beaches I have heard have diamond laying on them....  Angry

It is safer to ust stick to relics and normal detecting here  Great

You will only find diamonds on the skeleton coast the rest of the coast you need to excavate (Not permitted any more) or use a suction pump to remove the gravel from the sea bed. I should still have some photos from the time that I was working there should if I find them I'll post them for you to see.

All the best
Xavier
