Hi All,
Well I got the camera working but it feels like its at the end of its usefullness, carrying it around in the bush is a bit "rough service" for this model.
The mystery object is the hatchet looking object at top of picture with the group of items, its not a tomahawk as it is too small to do any damage.
My detecting buddy did well again with two silver coins, one US and one Canadian he also found the WW1 Canadian "Engineers" badge, two iron buckles, I found the two 1812 buttons one a very nice "Royal Canadian Volunteers" button also two US "Boy Scout" badges they are small and were found very close together they are smaller than a dime, ..........Any offers on the mystery object???
.........HH...............Johnnn

The Boy Scout pins look like the Tenderfoot Badge. They were fairly small in size.  Have to do some thinking about the mystery find..... Wink

Small wood working hatchet? Just to check is it flat on one side?

Great finds, thanks for the pictures.  As for the mystery item, does the shaft look like it might have a hole?  If so, this might be a valve control for some irrigation equipment.  Keep up the good search, HH Robroy59

Hi Gola,
Yes it is flat on "one" side is there a reason for that? it was about 10" in the ground which is where most 1812 stuff is found but because of its shape I cant I D it...HH.......Johnnn

They used a flat sided hatchet or axe to make a flat surface on wood. Search for Hewing hatchets and you should see some other examples. Here's one example.

Hi Ghola,
Thats interesting you just ID'd another hatchet I found many years ago, but this one is very small so I don't think it fits the axe idea....HH....Johnn

I was thinking a small version for some specialty work. Next question just to see if on the right track does it look like it had a sharpened edge? General shape appears to be like a Tomahawk, Squaw Axe or trade axe. But if flat on one side it would seem built toward some one working on wood. One thing about at that time if someone needed a axe they just went to the local blacksmith. The thing that gets me is the part going to the handle. BTW

here's
a pretty good site for trade axes.
