Go Up Go Down

First day out since joining the site.  Found mostly junk but did find several interesting stones.  I'm not sure what they are or why they set off the detector but they are lava rocks- black and very pourous.  Any help with why they might be setting off the metal detector would be greatly appreciated.

Hay Relic Raiser.

We like to find trash,

{alt}

That is where tha gold hides.

On them thare rocks,

what kind of detector ya findin um with?

I would guess that there is mineralization
or maybe even some iron in tha rocks.

Most people call those "hot rocks".

If they are hot rocks,

it may be hard to tune them out if you do
not have manual ground balance or ground
tracking.

HH,

Tabdog

Tabdog,

I'm using a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV.  It doesn't have all the bells and whistles but I figured I'd try to perfect my craft a little before I go out and get a nicer one.

As far as the rocks, I'm pretty sure they're not indigenous.  I thought about maybe taking them to the local cooperative extension of Penn State University.  Maybe there is someone there involved with geology.  Maybe they can help me out.

Hay Relic Raiser,

Boy, that would be neat if ya could find something
scientific about tha rocks.

I'd be interested in anything ya find out.

At this stage, I still think you may be dealin with hot
rocks.

A lot of MDers have problems with them. Some areas
do not have them, and other areas seem to have too
many of them.

I have been in areas where they are hard to deal with,
even with a detector that has manual ground balance.

Your Tracker IV is a good starter machine.

I had a BH Quick Draw II. I paid $210 for it.

I know now that tha Tracker IV works just as well as
tha QD II. So I wasted money. But money spent on a
hobby I love was not wasted. If ya know what I mean?

I do not care for bells and whistles. I just use non-TID
machines with analog controls.

I had some TID machines. Was not happy with any of
them.

Others think I am an old coot stuck in a rut.

That is OK, I like my rut.

As far as those rocks. Until you are able to make them
not respond, maybe you should learn them.

Tha best way ta find treasure is to know yur trash well.

So, if ya can learn ta deal with, and ID tha rocks, thay
can respond and ya don't have ta dig um. Wink

I sometimes put up with false responses in troubling
ground so I can keep my depth.

If ya tune out tha rocks just using sensativity and
discrimination, you will be loosing yur depth and
sensativity to small objects.

So, for now, maybe some learnin is on tha minu.

Hope ya can learn and deal with it. That is what it
is all about.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

Those toys can be fun to find! You don't see too many kids out in the backyard playing with toy cars or soldiers anymore. Seems like once kids reach a few years old it's all cartoons and video games.  Well maybe I'm being a little pessimistic but it's fun to think back to he day when kids would lose those old toys and what life would of been like for them.

It will take a while for you to tune your ears and detector to dishtinguish betwen good and junk signals. But its always a good idea to dig if you are not sure specially on deep targets. Good start though

farmers would burn their trash in fields and unfortunately, oour detectors are keen to it. I'm thinking it's called "slag?"
