finally got a chance to get out and spend some time detecting in a local park here in Pendleton OR. btw, they have changed the detecting rules here. you still need a permit to detect from the parks department like before, but they are now free. anyway, I went to the park by the river in the NE end of town where they have the cowboy breakfast for the
Pendleton Roundup, (recently voted best big rodeo in the US) and had a fun couple hours with my explorer. finds that trip include my largest piece of silver jewelry yet, and my third susan b anthony dollar. The bracelet was down about one and a half inches below the sod, so it had been there a while. After lifting the plug, i could see the edge and almost covered it back up thinking it was a pop can bottom. But because im in the habbit of removing and disposing of such things,so i was rewarded. pj

You should ask. The worst they can do is tell you no.

Im sure you are right HH, but Im not one to look in the obvious places (unless Im out for some brain numbing coin shooting just for fun). There is a medium sized park next to the rodeo grounds with huge trees. The Native Americans demonstrate their ancient dance techniques for the tourists there every year. Its free and attracts thousands of people for hours.  That would have been the place to go, but its been done to death. The rodeo is one hundred years old this year, and the natives have been a big part of it since the very first one. Its a very culturally great place to live, and the pace of life is slow and friendly. Unfortunately, a lot of the old places have been regraded and paved over because of flooding from the Umatilla river, which was straightened and a big rock and earth berm put next to it,  so its not the best place to detect. I guess we cant have it all or every one would live here! pj
