Go Up Go Down

Here are my favorite finds from a recent  detecting trip to Dodge Park.  on the Sandy river in western Oregon. The area where the park sits now was once a stopover place for the early pioneers travelling to the willamette valley on the Oregon trail by way of the Barlow Pass. Familys would lay over here because of the plentiful game and clean water. The men would travel to the valley to plot out a homestead, then return and guide their party to their new home and start building and planting. i found out this info WAY too late to find alot of stuff, but did find a few good items. An 1899 indian head penny is one of my oldest dated coins (hey, no laughing you east coast guys! the west coast just isnt as easy to find old dates) Also found a womans broach that is a Peacock? sealed in some kind of clear resin and seems to have been guilt in gold plate around the outer edge. It looks old to me but no telling, the clasp pin is broken in half on the back. As i was detecting, i saw a nickel laying on top of a mole hill and picked it up and put it in my pocket, not thinking too much of it. when i got home i threw it in with some other clad coins and noticed it had a funny color. i looked at the date and realized it was a war nickel, 1945. also found a few wheat backs and other clads, not worth showing here. See pic, pj

Cool Finds.  Your Right.  Old coins are harder to find in the west for sure.

Way to go, Pat!  You're doing great.  I live right near a park that was an Oregon Trail rest area.  Never found any old stuff there, but last fall the city did some digging and installed some playground equipment.  They piled all the dirt on the west side of the park.  I gotta get down there with my detector very soon!
