Sounds like a great place to detect - I really like to find objects like you pictured. I had one of those lizards refuse to let me rest on "his rock" once in the desert - no way would he leave me alone even though I wasn't a danger to him. Defending his turf, I guess, but sheesh!  Smiley Sue

tabdog;

Thanks for blowing up the pictures! Pray

The ring with the hook is used in hitching horses/oxen to the load, it looks like off a double-tree or a single-tree, I havent seen one since the 40s, but it seems to me they usualy had a full turn on the hook, with just enough room to get a link of chain on.... the 360 degree hook kept the link from falling off, when the tugs were slack.

Beyond the hook is a big old hand made nail, its very square, made by a blacksmith. A good anvil has a couple of holes just for making nails.

Used to be an old Oblate  Amen Catholic mission, on the Peace River, south of my home town (Fort St. John, BC) where you could pull them out of the logs. Detecting

The nail could be over 100 years old, easily 150! Hey! We still had horse and wagon trucking, here when everywhere else had trucks for 50 years or more. My grandpas were teamsters when there were still teams. Wise

I found a really old piece like that,

{alt}

Look at this. This is a halter from tha 1930s.

{alt}

{alt}

It is not exactly tha same thing. This is more
modern.

But you can get a feal for how they were used.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

I thought I might add this so I do not
confuse things too much.

{alt}

These things were probably on a chain.
But it may have hooked to a rope. Also
both ends can be secured with rope.

Like those iron rings we find, they may
have been used in different ways.

{alt}

That is my thinkin anyways,

Tabdog

Homefire,  thanks for the link and the info on the lizard.  I grew up in the mountains with my dad and brother.  I have hiked and hunted all over N.M. and have never seen a Collard Lizard.  Go figure.  How goes it in Deming?

Justanalien,  thanks!

Sue,  sooo many good places to hunt  here in N.M. other than our local parks and schools and such.  I like the mountains and every time I go hiking my detector goes with me.  It is interesting to see what you might find way out in the middle of nowhere!  We saw three of the Collard lizards, they all looked and acted angry at our presence.

Tabdog, Wow!  Thanks for the great info on the stuff we found and for the better pics of our finds! Who says you cannot learn something new every day!  I will let my son know, he will be very interested to find out what some of the items we found really are.  Any ideas on the sprocket looking thing?

Metalhead, thanks for the kudos!

Brian, the pics Tabdog blew up look great don't they!  We would have never guessed the hook thing was a piece of tack, we thought it was off an old wagon.  Hardly a day goes by hunting here in N.M. that we do not find a square nail or two of all sizes.

Thanks all!

Ironman

Those who say it cannot be done.....
should not interrupt the person doing it!

You will never find Treasure.....
unless you hunt for it!

Hay Iron Man,

Glad I could help. I know that lots of folks have helped me.
I am only glad to pass on tha things I have learned.

I think that thing probably did hook to a wagon. But I think
it was to hook up a team. It is not a bridle piece, but part
of tha team assembly. I think. Heck, I aint sure about this.
Pluss some of this stuff had more than one use.

The sprocket thingy does not have teeth. It has what looks
like a timming mark on it.

I would guess that it is a fly wheel for an old clock.

If not a clock, a clock work mechanisum of some kind.

Wish I knew Mor,

Tabdog

Oh, I do know one thing.

That Boss Brand thangie is off a carpenters,
or machanics pouch. It is something like that.
May not be very old.

HH,
