Only way to know would be to shop around.

I know this is an old thread, but it is still valid. Tesoro is still making and improving the Vaquero. I bought mine last fall, and iI will not part with it unless it gets total destroyed. Excellent depth, lightweight, several ways to use it. Works exactly the way the manual says it is supposed to. I bought it used, but it was only 5 months old. Guy bought it for the grandkids, but they lost interest in it in a few days. Their loss, my gain. I have found over 1200 coins so far plus some silver and gold jewelry, medals, silver coins and rings. If I found something better, I would still keep this one.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

Right now, I'm torn between my two Tesoro's.   There's a lot that I really like about the Lobo Super Traq, and if I'm out looking for nuggets, it's definitely the machine I'm taken.   On the other hand, that Vaquero is so much lighter unless you either belt mount or hip mount the Lobo.   But belt mounting and hip mounting cause problems of their own (especially if you need to set the detector down to take care of business).    So it look like unless my main target is natural gold, the Vaquero is my machine of choice (but I usually have both of them with me....and the fact they use the same coils makes it really nice--just that much less to pack into the truck).

The Vaquero is an all purpose detector. It's a great coin machine, but has no way to identify weather it's a zinc penny or a copper penny/dime/quarter. It's a relic hunter in the all metal mode, as well as a gold machine in the all metal mode. If you purchase one by all means get the 7x10 DD coil as well plus a good pinpointer. Then you have a system to be reconed with.
