The display in my old Xlt was never any good in cold weather. Used to fade right out. Electric meter manufacturers use LCD displays in most all of their meters. One problem is the Z strip that electrically connects the display crystal substrate to the main pc board. Cold and hot cycle expansion sometimes causes the Z strip to lose connection and then the segments fade. Not really a metal detector problem. I surmise the metal detectors that have LCD fading and failure in cold is related to the quality of the crystal display itself.... IE cheaper... They are probably not designed for cold weather.
