Curious if anyone else experiences instability on their detector LCD screen when the temperature is below freezing.  Any suggestions?  Thank you for your time.

Yes, I have and extreme Cold can damage them for sure.   Wal-Mart sells the hand warmer packs that are good for a 3-6 hour time.  Put one in your battery pack or tape one to the bottom of the machine.   Never let your detector freeze over night.  Batteries can do Bad Bad things after a freeze too.

Also if you use Lithium Batteries they have a 10 year shelf life and they will not leak but most of all the still perform down to minus 30degrees and the can have up to 6 times the working life of duracell or energizer,,,

Try getting some Energizer Lithium because these detectors are costly and the last thing you want is leaking batteries inside them,, I use them in my Shooting gear and the folks who designed them said its the only way to stop leakage as some folks I know have had normal duracell and energizers leak due to these gizmos still using a small amount of power even when they are turned off and even high quality batteries like Duracell and Energizer will leak if your applience continues to use power after it is switched off.

As for the LCDs crapping out, My shooting toys dont suffer from that and i have tested them by putting them in the freezer and so did the factory,, Remember if you have good batteries the power the machine uses creats heat and the heat with help to keep the screen clear snd working,

Also checkout some good Hi output Lithium rechargable Batteries,,,Lithium is the only way to go really even more if you Value your equipment,

hope this helps,,

Thank you for your replies.  Lithium sounds like the battery to use in the cold season for sure.  As far as the LCD screen.  I now just take out my CZ3D instead but for sure have noticed the lithium batteries last longer than the alkaline in the cold.

Hello Mate,,,Just an Idea try putting some of them heated re-useable hand warmers in the meter cover that will help in extreme cold.

I don't do sub-freezing anymore!  Barely go out when it's below 40F!  Besides, I almost exclusively use detectors with analog meters, so I don't worry about LCD's.  This from a guy who used to ski the mountains from top to bottom and didn't care what the temperature was, how hard is was snowing or how hard the wind was blowing.  If I could get to the mountains I would be playing in the cold.  Part of the game was to see how big an ice bush we could get in our beards and mustaches!

Man!  That was great!  I just can't do it anymore!    No no!                          Detecting

This is my first LCD screen machine.  I just leave it home now and use the CZ instead, and as suggested put a hand warmer over the meter.  Don't need it, the meter anyways.
Thank you for all of your useful suggestions.
I lived in Alaska for awhile.  All that cold weather gear goes to waste down here sitting in a closet.  Even the -40 sleeping bags.  Probably never use them again.   The other part of this is I never desire to see -67 degrees F on a thermometer again.  Just sayin….
