I'm not sure if this is sidescan sonar, or a different type, but it should work the same.

I have a Hawkeye Portable Fish Finder (FF3000P).  (Manual can be found

.

I'm building an Underwater ROV, and I would like to take the transducer from this, and build a sonar imager that I can mount to the front of the ROV, and use it to form images of what's in front of it in murky waters.  I'm planning on using a  microcontroller such as an Arduino in the ROV to control its movements and other sensors.

I've been looking on the web, but have only found a different conversions, and none with any similar device to mine.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With the one I'm building now, an absolute most of somewhere between 150-200 feet.  However odds are I'll probably stay in the 10-30 feet range, maybe going in to 75-100 if I can find a deep enough spot, and if I feel like it.

Cheesy  I'm still getting the supplies together.  This is going to cost me several hundred dollars, and I'm a little low on money right now.  I'll probably slowly acquire the rest of the parts over the next month or so, but I would like to see what I could do with this transducer right now.  At the least I would like to be able to hook it up to my computer and run some program to see if it will even work.

Best of luck, Perhaps ask  the retailer if they think it will work or not.

Based on your comments here, I suspect that you will not have a working sonar because a bottom walking robot will be too close to the area being scanned.

I'd suggest that you mount two of the units on your boat, one on each side, with motorized (stepper motors) scans that sweep from nearly straight down to about 50 degrees on each side. Have separate controllers for the motors and then, as you travel forward, your speed will have to be monitored along with the scan positions in two dimensions. It's quite doable that way and might make a nice collaborative project for a few of the interested members here. You would need a laptop to control and synchronize the entire collection of data and a GPS system with directional compass to keep track of what you are seeing and where it is.

Complicated? Oh, yes. Doable? Oh, yes. By a group of dedicated amateurs? Probably, with some advice and help. Start building your team, mate.

This won't be a bottom walking robot.  This is my first time doing any kind of U-ROV.  I'm doing a design I based off of those on homebuiltrovs.com.  It isn't going to have very many sensors on there, but I would like to have a custom built sonar.

This will not be used for mapping the floor.  It will be designed so that I can get a clear image in dark/murky/unclear waters.  It will be mounted on the front of the ROV to see what is in front of it.

As I said before, I don't think this is side scan sonar.  This is more akin to the Limpis system (without the very high accuracy).  I believe this is called a sonar imager.  I want to convert the sonar readings into a 2d picture.

So, my questions are:
A)  Can this be done?
B)  Can I do this with just one transducer?

This is from a fishfinder.  It can read depths of up to 100 feet, however I only really need it to tell me what is up close to about 10, maybe 20 feet.  It can tell me what kind of floor it is on the bottom (Rocks, bare, etc).  If it can do that, I'm hoping it will allow me to build an imaging device.

So again;
1)  This is not a bottom walking robot
2)  and Can this be done?
