You are an engineer. Good for you. Building a transducer is not the only problem with a side scan sonar project. It's just the beginning.
Think about it. You have a moving boat and sonar which generates a pulse traveling at 1482 meters per second. The boat is moving at an unknown speed so you do have to have speed sensors on the boat. Then you have to have the ability to move the transducer from nearly vertical to an angular displacement which is then tied to image data in 2 dimensions. This is no trivial design task. Absolute positioning information is critical. Then there is the matter of power and reflectivity. The ocean bed is soft and does not reflect well so during your design and testing you will need some hard object in the water. A computer tracking the boat velocity, the angle of the transmitted pulses and the return image of each pulse must be accurately recorded to get a good image.
