Xavier,
I downloaded the manual, and I was impressed. I felt like I should start building one right away until I remembered that I live in the desert.  Shocked

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

Grin Grin You could make it swim in the sand Carl. It's true that when one finds this kind of project we get carried away, another thing to remember is that you need a boat to be able to use it.

Maybe I could tow it behind my truck.  Cheesy

When I was working in the diamond fields I was thinking of designing a device that could measure density in the sand to find diamonds, I got so many negative responses when I spoke about it that I decided not to even attempt building it. I still wonder if it would be possible to do that though.

I sent a reply to this post, but it looks like it got lost in "LALA Land". Anyways,  I thought that was an interesting idea, although it might pose some difficulties. Sand likes to accumulate moisture in low places and it changes the density of the sand. In extremely dry places it is not as bad. That aside, a side looking sonar setup could be made using a wheeled transducer setup, like the one in the article, but because the sensor is so close to the ground you would have to do 2 things: sweep the assembly left and right while moving forward, and decrease the time between samples. How far the sound penetrates into the ground I suppose is limited by a lot of factors I suppose and resolution is low, but just like building a non-discriminating detector, you would get a lot of false targets before you found something. What have you got?

Carl

I was thinking at the time to have something like a ground penetrating radar that would reject any thing with a density less than 3.5 a bit like a fish finder. I still think that this should be possible, my thought was if one were to send an ultrasonic pulse/ sound it would be absorbed by the soft stuff but would bounce back on the hard stuff like diamonds. I must admit that I have not given this any more thought since back then. I was just thinking that with a density of 3.5 one would also be able to find ruby's that have a density of 4.0. I guess that it has never been made because of it not being a feasible idea.

Just remember Xavier,  that many an invention has come to fruition only because someone told them it could not be done.  Smiley

I believe it CAN be done.

Besides all the effort he put in on the project, he did a really nice job on the manual too. Makes ya want to run over to eBay and start looking for parts.

Yes you're right, it's also well explained that I'm actually considering to start collecting the parts to build it, and how hard can it be to find a fish finder.
