Hello Guys, GD I think you will find that modern fish finders use side scan sonar, and you can make out items such as cannon. Its like a map of the sea floor.

A fish finder will make up one component of a side scan sonar. You need a mapping program to make a full side scan image over a timeline.

You could find a boat or plane but not an anchor or cannon.

Or a C47 see what I'm getting at?

Well I think that it went down in water and yes water can be like hitting concrete but it's still quite a mass of steel just the engine could reflect on a side scan sonar if the props are still on it.

Xavier, the definition is the problem. An item that has fallen to pieces won't have a signature that looks much different from normal ocean floor. I'd say you're better off with a MAD (Magnetic Anomaly Detector) to find your lost airplane. Yes, I knew what you were getting at.

Are they difficult to build?

Hugely so, Xavier. They detect magnetic anomalies in the earth's field that have been caused by large metal mass. Normally used by the military to hunt submarines.

You might be able to rent one.

What makes them so difficult to build? where can I read more about these MAD's do they work like a magnetometer?

Hi Xavier, A MAD is the same as a magnetometer. I did a search with google, some info there. Some mention of them being used during ww2, reference to a fluxgate magnetometer & much more.
