Hello Pete!

Welcome to THunting.com!

Well, I personally think that the Burton would be great for your needs. You use it with 200 feet of cable probably even more. This should bring you close enough to your wrecks especially when using a so called depressor wing. Ratio would be about 2 : 1 then (that is 200 feet of cable gets you down to 100 feet depth). Without the depressor wing it is about 3 : 1. I would recommend buying 300 feet of cable.

Otherwise you only need a fish finder (some models that work with it are listed on the Burton site). It will store the data along with GPS information for evaluation on your computer.

Regards,

Christian

Hi Christian,

thanks a lot for the info. I will certainly take your advice and get the 300foot of cable. not actualy knowing too much about it I might get the sounder with it. That way when i receive it, I can just go plug it into some power tow, the fish, mow the lawn and we are operational. If my life depended on knowledge of electronics then I would long since be dead!!!!

Thanks again. I have sent an email to the boys at Burton!!!

Will keep you posted how I do!!

Thanks again

Pete

Hello Pete,

when you receive it the only thing you may want to change is its hanger. In as condition it is not perfectly balanced and with some minor effort your results will be much better. I can send you some pictures of the hanger modification.

The deepe you tow that is the closer you get to your target, the better your pictures will be.

Please keep us posted!

Best wishes,

Christian

You are welcome Pete! By the way, you are lucky to live in such a beautifull country. I really enjoyed my stay in New Zeland and even considered moving there at one point for opening a dive center Smiley

Yeah, I have been in NZ now for 14 years. Wife brought me here in 94 kicking and screaming. Found out the diving was amazing here so stayed. Its fantastic country. You should come. (Then I wont need to buy a sidescan!!!!!)

If you come on holiday here again let me know. You are welcome to come and stay with me. My kids will jump all over you but I can organise some amazing diving!!!

All the best

Pete

Hi Christian, I was previously a member of the forum but it looks like you changed platforms since the last time I was here, so I found I had to reregister when I came back today -- nice to check the site out again.

I've owned a Burton M1 unit for a couple of years, but haven't used it extensively until just recently.  I'm now trying to get it out on the water to get parameters like distance, angle, boat speed, etc, dialed-in for best image quality.

When you say its towfish can be improved with slight modifications, is there information on them somewhere?  I see you mention a "depressor," which I gather must be something like an add-on fin to keep it running deep -- is there somewhere to see a design for that?

Hello Frank,

Welcome aboard. Yes, the depressor wing is sort of an extra fin. Go to

www.jwfishers.com
There you can see a picture of one or type in depressor wing at Google's picture search. It is very easy to build. With a depressor wing, your tow depth will be up to 1/2 of the tow cable length. Without it is only up to 1/3.

To standard hanger is not perfectly balancing the fish as it is a bit of center. Also you can add a better nose to teh fish. Henc eit will run more steady and give you better image quality that is less distortion.

The Burton is an excellent system. It's 200 Khz tansducer actually produces an image quality equal or better to most 600 khz systems.

Best wishes,

Christian

Thanks.  Yes, I found that "Deep Dive Wing" in a Google search.  $1,195 for what I assume is a fairly small piece of plastic!   Crazy  I guess it reflects a small market for the product.
