I'll point you to you-tube.......lots of videos of privy digging there.   I haven't gone deep enough yet to worry about a collapse.  But then , my kind of soil doesn't support many deep privies.

outstanding, thank you.  i think I'll just try and go with everyone elses way of doing it instead of just reinventing the wheel.  I'd really like to try it and see what i can find, I've even got one at my cabin, but i don't know the age of that one at all.  i need to check out the youtube thing.  thanks once again

Well after a bit of retrospection, I now realize that the privy I used as a small child has probably been sealed up for 40 years or more now, so it's probably all turned back into natural dirt.  It seems like the grandparents put indoor plumbing in around 1968 or 9.  Still, the thought of digging the thing turns my stomach.  I know that I personally never threw anything other than a few pages from the old phone book down that hole after finishing my business, so as far as I'm concerned there's nothing in there I'd like to dig up.

yeah, this is definitely one type of digging in which propper PPE would be worn.  Grin the one at my cabin, I'm not too sure anything very interesting would be found, but the other one i want to dig that's on the old pioneer homestead has some potential.  I'll have to see what the land owner says.  he told me to tear it up and find what i can before they develop it, and the old outhouse shack is still standing, so I'll ave to ask him if i can put it out of the way a bit.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
