Best done when the ground  fully wet with water and hope one does not hit a rock along the way hard.  However is a quick and cheep way to get started.

This one has seen a pipe probe hammered down to 18 - 20 feet looking for large rocks that maybe in the way of digging a well after going through some tree roots with no problems.
A simple rod probe should also last say maybe 360 test probe holes if used right with not to much force applied.
Two to four probe rods are not only cheep but can save days if not many months of digging time just in case one probe gets stuck in a tree root or a old septic tank.  Thumbs Down

Hello
By the way if there are four people test probing targets at the same time 400 test probe holes can be done in a week even if one probe rod gets stuck in a septic tank or tree root for good at 6 feet down in the ground.
Try digging 400 test probe holes by hand down to say 5-6 feet.........LOL Cry

Hello
Just another few tips on the 'Steel probe of 6 feet' is to take a flat steel bar that is about 3/8 inch thick by 1 to 1 1/2 wide by 10 - 12 inches long and weld on the non - spear pointed end of the rod.  Centered to make a 'T - handle' so that one can hammer the 'Probe rod' the full 6 feet to the handle and still have a hand grip to pull out.  One can also buy a 'Farm jack' to help lift out the probe if it hits a tree root or septic tank.  Idea  The handle serves a grip for your fingers and a sound bar 'Speaker' to help listen for targets that are 'Probed' or hit.  Idea
One can lift out the steel probe and drop down a small round magnet (with some lead shot) on a cord or even a camera with lights for further testing.  Idea
A camera may help tell if there is some coins or stone ware down the test probe hole?  Idea

I believe the pulse TDI would be deeper than a 2 box detector as I have both and my tdi has 3 heads one being a 14inch for deep items. Now this is just a thought so bare with me. I use an         mfd or maybe an electroscope to maybe tune in on the item.I know everyone po pos this idea, if u could find some one that dowses etc to come over to have a shot at it maybe, I"m 75 yo and been cache hunting 47 yrs now and I use a l rod or a electroscope or anything I think will work to narrow the search area down. There are dowsers on this forum or other forums that will dowse it for u for free,I use them and use 3 at a time to see if they hit the same area or are all over the field. Nothing ventured nothing gained.  I have a quart jar with 900 zinc pennies in it buried at 15in to the top of lid and my 2 box (808) will hit it and my pulse (tdi) will hit it. But my test jar is not as deep as your cache it sounds like. I have gotten items as deep as about 4 ft but it wasn't easy and I had it dowsed first. as I have other machines (detectors) to help me out  just a thought as your cache is their its just out of range for what u have used,    shortribs.

Hello
After more than a 100 years one should probe a full 6 feet in the most likely areas even if this means 200 - 600 probes.  The other option is to get some heavy equipment in there probing all around.   Waveing

If u have anyone close that has GPR (ground penetrating radar) machine to pay them for an hours use to have them run over the ground for a fee and let them walk away and you dig at it to see what was under the ground. GPR or a dowser or L rod or what ever beats nothing and it sounds like its their somewhere.   shortribs
