Trying to build one

Go Up Go Down

Hi guys, I have been a little busy at work recently. But I have not had a chance to use the detector outside there's still too much snow on the ground.See the picture of my backyard.

I have tried using the detector in the basement, but the results I'm getting don't seem to be what they should be. I can move a small pair of steel pliers past the coil at about 12 to 14cm in the air to get the detector to respond. When I try and detect some gold rings we have the detector has a hard time detecting them , I have to keep the coil 2cm away from the rings to detect them. I'm sure I can get better performance out of it, but I asked Cornelius if he had done all the modifications on it, he said he had already done so.
So I'm not sure what I should do, I have built a smaller coil using the formula " Pie * R Squared * # of turns. This one was 180mm in diameter, the difference in performance was not much better then the 200mm.

Sincerely  Aliman

Ali  . No use in building a second coil of 180mm if the old one was 200 mm . The difference in diameter should be a lot greater than that ( say  100 mm   or a larger one of 300 mm  ) . If the coil will register a pair of ( steel ) pliers  and you do not change the setting of ( VR2 ) , the sensitivity it will not register gold as good . You have to work with the sensitivity . Turn it all the way back untill you do not hear any sound  ( without having metal in the neighbourhood of the coil )  . Think about it that concrete has rebar in it !  .  Cornelius

Ok , so I should try a smaller diameter coil for more sensitivity, say 100mm. Ok I'll try that.

Aliman

P.S.  They should have had the Olympics  where I live, we have no shortage of snow. lol ! Grin

Cornelius is right about the rebar. By the way Aliman our pies r round here in Bama! I have a couple of Whites metal detectors and need to make a couple of small coils. Where can I find the pattern for a coil? I think these uses 2 coils. One large one and a small one overlapping somehow. We had a good bit of snow also for a change. Sure enjoying reading U guys adventures. I do have a good bit of electronic parts if anyoone needs any.

Bill

Hi Bill

Firstly I'd like to welcome you to Thunting.

As for the coil setup that you are looking for you should post the model and type of detector that you have. The members that have Whites will be able to help you as I do not have any info on the Whites I can?t be of any assistance to you.

Regards Xavier

Thanks Homfire I knew that I could count on you   Great

Thanks Xaviar,

If I ever learn how to use the response boxes. Aliman wrote asking for some caps. I'll get out to my stash in a day or two. Dog gone snow and cold and a few ailments has slowed me down. I may have what he needs in mylar. If I have them I'll mail them to him. I used to have a shop and fix vcrs, tvs cmcorders etc but have quit that many moons ago. still love to piddle with it though. Fortunately I was able to buy my waveform analyser back last year. It's a freq counter and waveform analyzer in one so can still do a liitle playing!Love to fly RC models. Built a couple of ultralights but want to do some detecting. Never really done any to speak of. Like to find some gold etc.

As for the Whites MD one is a 6000D GEB and the other is a Coinmaster 1AM Cheaper one. I built a detector years ago and had the layout of the coils but with moving with the military over the years things gets lost.

I'll do some research and find something n it.I'm curious about Cornelius. Wonder if our paths have crossed before?? Sure sounds familiar.

Thanks.

Hi guys, it's been a while since I talked to you all. I seem to have the detector set up perfectly, now I'm waiting for all the snow to go away. It just snowed yesterday and dropped another 30 cm, $*%# !
Just some advice to anyone who's thinking about moving to Canada, you'd better love the snow ! Grin

Aliman
