Ok, My Turn.

In the Aritical there is a circuit board loading siquence.

Pull all chips you can.

Read the loading and primary test sugested and start with the first one.

Step 1 is omitted because your not using that section.

Step 2

LOAD ic2 and C11

switch on.

measure output of C2 it should be -5v.

switch off.

If your chips are soldered to board, just pull the ground pin if you can.

Heat it up and bend out of place with tweezers.

One more idea, which doesn't need soldering: do any of the parts heat up noticeably? In that detector only Tr2 is allowed to warm up, and just a little bit. Practically no other parts should be warmer than room temperature. If one of them is hot, that is consuming the power!

Still looking for that short that I created. One obeservation I made, I have two small 12V batteries, when I connect them to the Power cord, there is 24volts at the end of the power cord. But when I plug the power cord into the Metal detector, the voltage drops drops down to 18.4 volts. What the F$#*.
When I use two 9v batteries ,total of 18.4 v. I plug the power cord into the detector it drops down to 17.1v
Gotta keep looking.

Probably your 12V batteries are low. Without load, even the exhausted batteries are able to put out nominal or close to nominal voltages.   The output only drops down when you connect the load.
Keep going with the 9V batteries. I recommend power on, and looking for any part abnormally heating up. If nothing heats up in 2-3 minutes then you can stop, and we've got to find out another way.

Peti80, thanks for the heat check tip.  I did what you suggested and after about 1 min., TR2(TIP31C) got really HOT.
I think we found the problem.
