Just been doing some research and found that an 18th.C workhouse is on my street and about 200 yards away. It was last used as an 'hospital' for smallpox in the late 19th.C

The area is overgrown and all that exists is scrubland and cobbled streets on both sides and a large kerb on one side of where it used to be.

It was started around 1745.

Hmmmm, you might find some interesting relics, but I wouldn't hold out much hope for coin......still I'd join the hunt if I were there.

Yes I rather think that money was indeed in very short supply here !  Grin

It's difficult to think what might be around. I might have a look later today.

Apparently there are cellars that have just been covered up and left. The smallpox issue sounds dire, and I know that quite a few people died in this workhouse. It was known at the time as Poor House lane.

For those that don't know anything about English workhouses , the Dickens novel OLIVER TWIST starts at a workhouse. They were used to frighten people into work, and it worked.

The inmates used to call workhouses a 'spike'.
