Assuming your using DD Coil ?
With the Coil NOT connected to the circuit connect a DVM to the coil leads. Measure the Inducted voltage in the Rx coil . Manipulate the Receive coil as to obtain the Least amount of inducted voltage as possible . This gets you well in the ball park.
VLF Detectors use the Phase Relation between the Tx signal (Reference) and the Received signal to detect the target. This Relation is also used by the Discrimination circuitry.
That Phase Pot is used to Set up the detector. Align the Rx and Discrimination. This is done using a please of Ferrite as a Target for Reference in most cases.
Hope this helps.
