If you want Little gold the machine is the Gold Bug II.  70khz.  The TGSL runs at about 14Khz.   Yes it can handle Black sands.

That's a nice machine, I can't even begin to afford one.

Is there a similar unit available as a kit, or a well documented thread?

After a bunch of searching, I'm ready to conclude that no one is DYI'ing 14khz machines in favor of a broader search band, from the sentiment I've seen...

Looks like the GB II runs at 71 kHz:

On Geotech there is a thread on the LOBO.  I think it's  20Khz.

The lobo has me excited.  There does not seem to be pcb's or even good images to print and burn my own.  How hard would it be to dissect the schematic for the GB II and emulate that?

Welcome to the Forum.  Do you have a detector at this time ?  Brows in our Beginners thread for Ideas.   Looking forward to your post.

Took the Silver Eagle to a nearby schoolyard. The first signal was a penny at 2 inches...pulled out a rusty nail and screw...under that, a penny! So, I was confident it worked, and went on to find 3 more pennies, one penny flattened to a token with a dinosaur on it, and half a pewter locket. Spent about half an hour. Fun!

Machine will not ground balance as per the manual. Never gives the sucess tones. Any ideas of the cause? Want to get it right, found the location of an old homestead, don't want a malfunctioning machine in my first cool location.

It pays to talk to the old locals!

First try to balance it at an other location.
Perhaps the area you are using it is mineralised.
There where times using my Eagle at the beach that I had to move to a fair distance before I was able to balance it.
