Go Up Go Down

When I retired a few years ago I bought a Garrett AT pro for something to do. Am learning how to use it and have found a few things but nothing exciting. I often go to Fl. to Sanibell and while there I have never noticed anyone detecting on the beach. I have thought of taking my detector with me the next time. Are there any restrictions on hunting on a public beach where everyone walks . I know that state parks are out and was told that the beach is public to the high tide line. Is this so. I would hate to have my detector taken by some badge happy cop.  This is my first posting am new to this site thanks

Welcome aboard.  Florida is pretty good about detecting.  May keep a eye out for Local regulations but to the most parts other then National and State Parks your good to go.  By law no one owns between the Low and High water marks in Florida.

You would do well to look at our membership list and seek out Florida residents. It's at the top under Community. Then sort on the state by selecting the proper header item. Look at each member there for the percentage of activity. The higher that percentage, the more active they are. Contacting someone who is not active here will frustrate you.

I haven't looked at your details yet but where are you from? Improving your skills doesn't mean working the beach. Depending on your location, you may have truckloads of hunting areas where you can hone your skills.

Welcome to the forum! Enjoy your time here.

Dear GD: I live in northern CT. When I hunt in my area at places people have congregated over the years I have found only the useual suspects such as small change and nothing exciting. Instead of looking for shells on the beach I could be doing something more productive and possibly find something beter like I see on most of the videos on U tube. Thanks.

I also live in northern CT. Well, nearly so. Mansfield CT is my stomping grounds. Our state has been highly populous since the early 1500s. You just need practice and perhaps a mentor to help you out.

Dear GD: Suffield is home base. I have a friend who takes his detector to Aruba every year and finds all sorts of jewelry at the beach where he stays. He told me that I should be using my ear phones to hear faint targets. Wouldn't I hear the same faint target with the plain audio? Just wondering. Thanks for all the help to all. Am not computer savy and will try to find members in Fl.. Thanks again. DW

You're missing all those wisper sounds without ear phones or ear buds.  Ears covered give you a whole new world of sounds to notice.  If anything else it forces you to pay more attention to the sounds at hand.

I will PM you with my phone number so we can arrange to meet somewhere in the middle after it warms up. I am in the middle of writing an article on historical research for metal detectorists that you will no doubt be interested in reading. I can't blame you. I can hardly wait to read it. Wink

When do you plan to go to Florida? Soon I hope since the cold isn't going to leave us any time soon. With multiple snow storms arriving over the next few days, well, if I had nothing else to do, I'd be on the road.
