Try a local university for help but be warned, possession of such things is not legal in some states or areas. Bringing it to them may result in forfeiture of your item. For historical preservation purposes, that's not hard to take but a personal loss like that can hit you in the gut. Give it some thought. Personally, I already donate hundreds of items a year to historical societies around the world so it wouldn't pain me at all unless it was made by my great grandmother or something like that.
