They are both CMOS but the NE555 uses more power so battery life will suffer.

NE555 is bipolar.   Depending on what your 555 is being used for would depend on the compatibility.   Cmos can be used as a Driver almost Rail to Rail as the NE555 is limited.  Just order the parts as called for and be done with it.

It's actually a hybrid. In the world of CMOS devices, one clue is the voltage range. Bipolar and TTL devices are all 5v devices. The CMOS families can all work with up to 12v. The NE555 has the honor of being one of the earliest of CMOS devices although, as pointed out, they are actually part CMOS and part bipolar. You can, indeed, replace one with the other functionally but, as I said earlier, battery life will suffer.

You can order one from eBay for under $1. The only drawback is waiting for it to come in. If you have the room for it on your board, you might want to socket the device. Why? Because if you order an exact replacement, you can change it out later. If you solder in a replacement you can accidentally damage the board when you replace it later.

Thank You for clearing that Up GD.   The main differences is the NE555 can operate at higher currents with less voltage range then the Cmos.  The Cmos versions can operate over a wider range of voltages with less current.  You can find the differences between the two here :

There must be another source you can use other then that one store.
