Carl  I had a 4900D that had all the knobs frozen I called the repair in Chicago and he told me to spray them with contact cleaner and take the knobs off and turn (force) the shafts with a pair of pliers which I did and all knobs came loose one was scratchy but all worked so's I sold it to a friend for 50 bucks and it still works good for him. I was scared to force the knobs as he suggested but it worked, didn't know if u have tried to force them or not or if u didn't wan't too.   shortribs  sw mo

Thank you Shortribs. Yes I tried that and all but one cooperated. So, I removed it from the board and used two pair of pliers, 1 on a pair of nuts I locked together on the threaded part, and another pair of pliers on the shaft.  It wouldn't budge even with extra force. Then I put it in the cleaner/lighter fluid/light oil bath. It's been there for a week and still won't budge. I believe the two aluminum parts have fused themselfs together. I appreciate your input.

I found another Treasure box of Pot's but alass, it was a Miss.    Sad   Thinking your going to have to buy one.    Can't find the Long 90% pins.  Maybe you can extend wire to the lugs ?

Thanks Homie. Don't know if Whltes sells components, but I  might try there if I  don't have luck in other ways.

Yep, whites does sell components. you'll just have to call them. 99% of the time Mary will answer, you will need to have all the info, mod#, serial # etc. Not sure how old that unit is but I have never had a problem getting parts from them when needed even for units 15 plus yrs old.

I  think I have some 250k pots in both on/off type and regular linear taper, hit me up on the home email and I'll send one over.. can you post a pic of the one you have?

Carl just a thought I worked in a diesel shop for 28 yrs and if something was frozen we use to get the chatter gun out and held it up against what was frozen in the detector pots I used to have an engraver for items and u might try to hold the engraver (vibrator) up next to the pot to vibrate it loose if nothing works. I've done this in earlier times and it works most times just a thought tho.  shortribs

Short Ribs your talking about something less then 3 grams.   Untrasonic may be the ticket if done right.

That probably would work Homie, the only problem is I don't have an ultrasonic bath. Guess I'll have to try the redneck way. If I mount it on a panel to hold it and use a vibrating tool, (not my Vibraprobe pinpointer) I could do it safely without damaging it. Hopefully the soaking might have done a little of the work.

Hello Golddustcarl.
Electronic Goldmine in Scottsdale, Arizona carries a bunch of obsolete potentiometers dirt cheap, audio or linear taper. If they don't have it call Mouser electronics. They have everything at a great price. Been buying stuff from both of them for years.
Best Regards............Eugene

Thanks Eugene. But not necessary now. I can say this is one for the redneck approach. I mounted it on a stiff metal plate, with the back case removed. Then I got out the old hammer. Yup. Hammer. Gave it a rough tap. Then I got out the old vise grips and clamped tight on the shaft. With some judicious twisting and a few arrggghhhs I manged to get it loose. I put some lube oil on the shaft and worked the shaft in and out and around till it was moving easily. Took it off the panel, remounted the cover, and now it seems to be ok. It's good to go now, just got to solder it back in the board and reassemble everthing so I can test it.
Thanks everyone for your input. I will post after I get everything back together and let you know how it goes.

Dusty Carl
PS. I believe that Scottsdale store is long gone.

Yup, sounds like you got it under control !!  Your right the "Electronic Goldmine" parts store is running out of a Post Office Box now, keeps the overhead cost down !!
