I own both the Minelab E-Trac and the Excalibur II, obviously quite different machines, and both are great at their intended use.
Not having owned any other underwater detectors, my comments won't have any qualification, the Excal is excellent once you figure out how best to use it. My ring count has recently exploded as a result of using the Excal in the shallows, my coin count quartered.
But, and there is a but to shallow water detecting, it is much more strenuous, and for that matter dangerous, the gutters on surf beaches are created by rips, so your wading waste deep in at times fast moving water, you have attached to your body a scoop and a detector. I haven't mentioned the waves!
Just a thought, it may be perfect for you, but safety first mate.
Cheers
Bazza

Point well taken, thanks for the reminder to use common sense. It's easy to forget and the reminder can be painful.

Hello,I have the Excaliber 11,works great in the water, surf, beaches, land, but it does do a great job in the water. No experience with the E-Trac,is that a newer model?
And yes ,watch for those waves and fast moving water,I;m 6'3 300+lbs and have been dragged over a few times!! Safety is as safety does!
regards Jason

Recently got an eXcal II,  very nice machine.  Still learning it, have found one gold ring and some junker jewelry with it so far, only been out a few times.  Can't disc out the pull tabs or bottle caps without it missing my thin or tiny gold test rings,  so pretty much beep & dig without having to deal with iron.  Happy with it so far, plan to get a straight shaft for it soon.

I am a relative newbie.  I own both the Excalibur II and the E-Trac.  Both are excellent detectors.  The E-Trac is easier to learn; however the Excal II is more versatile since you can go in and out of the water.  I have found that the audio CD (purchased from an independent seller), on Excal ear training, to be a very useful way to learn how to distinguish the various tones, for someone who is new and has limited time out in the surf.   The depth on both is incredible!  If either machine says that there is something there - rest assured - it's there.  You may have to dig for it, but it's there.
