Ok this is what I understand after reading, correct me if wrong.  To increase depth you can offset the ground balance of the machine, by adding 5 to your ground balance which in a Minelab really lowers the value.  For instance.  Say you ground balance at 50 and then add 5 that should bring the ground balance to 45 which should give better depth.

Is this correct.

Since ground is always different, there is no procedure to set it up using a formula. It's always trial and error. So, no. that is not correct except for one specific circumstance. The other million or so will be different.

You Can offset the GB to one side or another to allow the Threshold tone to open up a bit earlier to one side or the other but that too has issues.

You loose sensitivity to the far side.  Ferrous / Non Ferrous.

Everything has a Trade Off.

His question is ambiguous yet he wants a qualitative answer, Homefire. I believe he may be new at this.

There won't be a set number no matter where you are. The ground balance must be set by trial and error. Basically, you set it somewhere in the middle and turn the machine on with the coil about 18 inches above the ground. All other things being adjusted correctly, you lower the coil to the ground. If the sound goes up on volume, adjust the ground balance one way. Turn it off and do the same thing again. If it is still going up, adjust it some more. Keep trying until you get no difference in the sound. That's the goal.

:)The above information is very important to me since I have a Minelab detector which is a great detector.  Good luck to all of you.

What I have been doing is using the auto adjusting way of GB.  There is also a button to use that continues to change the ground balance as you detect, I dont use it much.  The area Im trying to learn is how to offset the number you get when GBalancing to help in detecting.  Some say increase the number some say decrease.  I guess it is a trial and error thing.  Some say it helps in depth Some say it helps in seperartion.  I dont know if this is true as no one really addresses it.  I will try to experiment.  I thought some on here might have tried this but maybe not.  If i get time to figure out if it helps and in what conditions I will try to post for others.

When you offset the ground Balance you can tune the machine to respond to either ferros or non ferros objects  by adjusting the soil timings settings from around 10us up to around 17us, check out minelabs forum or do a search for Jonathan Porter as he is the wizzard of the GP/GPX series of detectors, he's in Australia so you should find him on a forum there but your best bet is to contact Steve Herschbach as he is the Gold machine God thats for sure,

I hope this helps, But try here first coz you should find Steve here
