Hello,
Below is an email I recieved from a Local dealer explaining the 4800 to me.
JP, I appreciate you taking the time to email me about the Minelab Pulse Induction detectors, or any other for that matter since I use, sell, compare and train on all 5 major brands.
The GPX machines are the deepest on the market and can handle salt beach better than any other detector, but there are drawbacks. You need to make sure the beaches do not have a lot of electrical interference near by and the PI units (all brands) can easily hear them and interfere with their function.
If you primarily hunt gold rings and coins, then go with the GPX-4800 and save the money. Right now I am offering a Spring Promo on the 4800 for $4035 shipped and that includes 3 Days training.
Yes the older Minelab PI?s will also work and you may find one of them at a better price. The only drawback is the lack of additional timings on the SD series. Try to stick with a GP-3500 or newer if you can find one.
You?ll get 2 to 3 times the depth of your Sov GT.
I am heading out of town for the week to train customers and will not be back until Tuesday 19th.
Please reply then and I?ll be happy to answer any more questions.

.......This is from me and not the dealer above.
My guess is that Minelab will release something new this year like an Excaliber 3 with 28 frequecies?
Or somekind of waterproof SD?
It would only make since for them to dominate the deepths with a waterproof detector with the maxium amount of frequincies or the technology that they have created that have been proven to work.
If you think about it,The SovGt and the Excal are really outdated regardless of how will they still preform.
My only thought about a new Excal 3 would be that it would be very cheap compared to the 4800 and might over shadow it?
But than again it would be the Ultimate waterproof detector and not a prospecting detector.
Only time will tell.
