Hi All
I found this button in a field where there was a battle between French and Austrian 18th-century soldiers,
do you like it?

I am Sorry.
I realized that you are experiencing difficulties with the definition of the buttons.
IMHO it's Light Infantry France 1791-1803 years. Look catalog Fallow Louis "Le bouton uniforme Francais"

I have no reason to disagree with RGE's assessment.    Satiricom found the button on a battlefield where French forces fought Austrian forces during the period between the time Louis XVI was beheaded and the time that Napoleon I was crowned emperor.   This is the period of the first Republique Francaise.....and during this period the Republic of France was actively sponsoring the overthrow of existing governments and the establishment of "Republics" throughout Europe, specifically including Italy where there primary opponents were the Austrians.   It was during these conflicts that Napoleon Bonaparte first raise to prominence (and it was in fact his success leading the Republique Francaise troops against the Austrians in Italy, that led to his being appointed first consul and from there emperor).   The dates for the first French Republic are generally accepted as 1792 to 1804.

So, it's possible that this could come from one of the later French Republics, but I also don't see any reason based on just the evidence presented to think it doesn't come from the First Republic (pre-consulate, though).

BA
