I had the same problem. What I did was to hook it up to an AVR programmer through the JTAG connector X2 on the board and I read the device content and basically
I did a checksum against or verify the (F.Andy Author's) Hex File. I found out that AVR code was indeed not correct. So I reprogrammed the AVR. You need six connections,
MISO, MOSI, GND, VCC, RESET and CLK in order to do the ISP programming.
Now The Chance is working somewhat, and I do get a good working LCD and the buttons work fine, the menu comes up good as well. But it still has some issues.
I do remember that When I initially attached my home made coil, Q3 started overheating somewhat and I was not seeing the correct waveform
signals on the scope. I suspected that the coil I've built is not up to specs, so I have to look at that the next time I work on it.
There used to be a good web page on the Russian metal detecting forum you can just...Google

I did not see it there or maybe I just did not look hard enough. You may want to try emailing the Author. mailto:fandy@front.ru
It has been a while since I last tinkered with it. And frankly I haven't had the time to revisit this.
I know how you feel...Not much info on the CHANCE Metal detector out there anymore.
Good luck, and I hope this helps.
