Hi all,
i have recently bought a barracuda kit and soldered all the components on to the board, now when i turn on the power the irf6940 gets really hot and makes a humming sound, i have looked for any direct shorts or components in the wrong way but there are non (i think  Embarrassed ) i have looked at the 2n2222a orientation but all seems ok. Is there any kind folk that could help me with my project?

Your Problem is most like the Damping of coil.  Or the Coil it's self.    Start there.

hi Homefire thanks for the quick reply! with the barracuda it is suppsed to 'beep' once the power is turned on i dont get this. I am very much new to this when you say coil damping (i do not have a coil made yet) do i need a resistor across the coil terminals to damp it?

How do you know for sure if any components are not in backwards? Are you familiar with the polarity marks on capacitors, diodes and the IRF defice itself?

hi golddigger1950 the board is very clearly marked in terms of orientation and the caps have the neg marked down one side.

i get that it will not work without a coil but the circuit does not turn on, the circuit should emit a tone even without a coil attached, if i add a coiled length of 0.5mm wire the irf9640 gets hot very quickly

Electrolytic caps have a negative marking but tantalums have a plus marking.

Would you post a photo of both sides so we can see if there is anything obvious? Use the highest resolution but keep the images under 500k in size or the forum won't allow you to post them.

First glance, I see nothing wrong. Are all the transistors in their proper place?
