The Real Inventor Of PI Discovered
By Alan Hassell
April 21 2008
Owing to problems regarding patents I gave Eric Foster praise for being the inventor of Pulse Induction metal detectors, It has taken many years to realise that this was not exactly true.
It appears that Ebinger took out patents in Germany and was in the process of obtaining patents in the UK which was slowed down because of language problems with the Patent offices.
I have always written what I believed to be true at the time of writing and feel this matter should be corrected publicly.
You the buying public have a right to know!
In order to correct this mistake I am including an email?from Ebinger in hope this will clear the matter up and give credit to the real inventors of Pulse Induction.

Dear Mr. Hassell,
Our CEO, Klaus Ebinger, read your article detector production in Britain, about Mr. Foster and asked me to translate his letter to you into English which I enclose here after.
We really appreciate your unbiased work for the community of detector users over so many years. Unfortunately your comments on the lack of morals in EXPLOITATION seems to hit bulls eye.
Yours faithfully

Dear Mr. Hassell,
May I first introduce myself, I am Klaus Ebinger, owner of the EBINGER Pruf - und Ortungstechnik GmbH from Germany. Since more than 35 years we are designing and producing detection devices using active and passive principles.
This was also the reason why I read your above mentioned article with much interest. Nether the less I was disconcerted about the allusion that Mr. Eric Foster should be the inventor of the Pulse Induction principle for metal detection.
Let me recall the historical facts which often are suppressed in the U.K. in the USA and Australia:
The Inventor of the pulse induction principle is still Ing. Klaus Colani, M?nchen, who claimed his patent for this method on 12.November 1961. The patent document, which we will publish soon, carries here in Germany the number 1180 550. The UK patent was issued in UK on 3.July 1968 under the patent no. 1.036 629.
Early 1971 I purchased all patent rights from Mr. K. Colani and we became the first producers of PI devices in Germany.
In other words: I had the honour to become his apprentice and we further developed this method. Colani mentioned already earlier the problems with UK patent law and with Eric Foster in particular, who just made use of it.
It is be worth the effort to ask Mr. Foster whether Colani had informed him about the PI - ideas already while Mr. Foster was still employed in the archaeological institute. Foster later absorbed them illegally. Due to before said the inventive priority can not be attributed to Mr. Foster. This is also made clear in the brochure on our company history.
Please understand that the PI history, in particular for the sake of Mr. Colanis honour, can not be rewritten.
It might be advisable to check on published German patents when it comes to priority issues on technology.
With best regards from Cologne
Klaus Ebinger
